To kindle or not to kindle?

So i have been debating with myself for ages now if i should enter the dark materialistic side and get yet another bit of tech!

I love reading. Ever since i was a little girl i have loved ploughing through books. From the magic far away tree to the roald dahl classics i enjoyed drifting off into another world. Books are very powerful filled with entertainment and knowledge. The question is can a kindle live up to that feeling of holding a book in your hand and getting lost in its pages?

The idea of staring at a computerized devise is a bit of a put off although im told the screen is like looking at the page of a normal book!

I like the idea of having choice at my fingertips and being able to carry a library in one small space although in this modern day are you really going to want to whip out an expensive bit of kit on the bus to town. I have noticed that if your sporting a decent phone you can get a kindle app which im told is in sync with your kindle and you can pick up where you left off. This does avoid the problem of having to read on buses because lets face it if your a bus warrior like me then you get a lot of reading done on your commutes. This being said on safer travel like planes and holidays i imagine not having to lug a giant book in your suitcase can be a huge benefit as currently i am reading a paperback of ‘The pillars of the earth’ which is seriously weighing down my handbag!

Expense is a big issue im one for borrowing from the library to keep them open as im scared devises like these could wipe places like that out! I am also a fan of picking up a book from charity shops and donating them back when im finished to make sure a good cause is again supported although this method can be a bit of a reading lotto.

Another downside! With the rise of kindles and other e reader devises what will happen to great things like bookcrossing.com ? For those not familiar with book crossing it is a network of people who leave books in places for people to pick up for free and read. The other great feature of this is when a book is registered to bookcrossing (anyone can do this online) you can then track the book. Seeing how it travels, the places it goes and what others thought of it! This in itself is a story. Now you can’t do that with a kindle!

However as a bit of a study whore i do like the notes feature on a kindle. Being able to make quick notes and also picking up on others could be very useful for students around the world.

Im also noticing a lot of authors selling kindle only versions of their books. Is this a way that aspiring writers can cut out the publisher and get their work seen? If so that is a great progression so long as we don’t end up having to wade through an ocean if crap to get to the gold. Although with people like Katie price writing and having their book published it can be argued we already do!

As you can tell i am torn in my decision so come on guys what do you think?
